UTILITIES FOR SOLVING OPTICAL-CRYSTALLOGRAPHIC ISSUES

The PC computer utilities shown just below - which you can download free - were written by Gerald Wykoff GG CSM PhD who has simply given them to the lapidary community.

They're all DOS programs so they open up directly without installation nonsense but, remember, they're EXE utilities so some of your virus and firewall security barriers might get obnoxious if you try to open them on your hard drive.

  1. YIELD -- this utility will ask for the dimensions of a piece of rough, compare them to your intended cut and then tell you what the yield percentage for that particular cut will be.
  2. TANGENT -- ever see written instructions for quartz and you want to change the angles so you can cut for topaz. This utility solves, using the Tangent Ratio method, for you quickly and simply.
  3. SNELL -- When a light ray enters a gem material, the ray bends according to the type of gemstone material i.e., its Refractive Index. This program calculates how much entering and exiting rays bend.
  4. SPEED -- You have a certain diameter pulley turning at a certain RPM and you want to know the effect on a different diameter and how fast'll turn. This utility solves that question.
  5. GOLDEN -- You've heard of the Golden Ratio developed in Ancient Greece, a ratio often described as the most pleasing, esthetic proportions in design. This utility solves for any dimensions.
  6. TEMP -- Need to convert Celsius temperature to Fahrenheit temperature or vice versa? This program does the job in a fraction of a second.
  7. FRESNEL -- when light rays strike a gem surface, Fresnel's Law dictates how many rays are reflected. This utility will give you the precise percentage reflectivity of every popular gem type.
  8. RESHAPE -- Unexpectedly, you've run out of material thickness for the crown. This utility does the correct math for refiguring new crown angles that salvage the original plan design.
  9. GEARS -- What to do if you have a 32-notch index gear and the instructions for a new cut provide addresses for a 64 or 48 or 96 gear? This utility will quickly compute a translation of one index gear for another.
  10. WEIGHT -- a carat weight scale is nice but this utility will carefully and quickly calculate the carat weight of a cut gem just from the measurements that you provide.
  11. WEIGHT & LENGTH -- with this quick utility, you can translate any measurement reference into another i.e., inches to millimeters, ounces to kilograms, feet to meters, etc.
  12. CRITICAL ANGLE -- if you know the Refractive Index for any gem type, feed it to this utility and you'll immediately get the Critical Angle, helpful for figuring out angles.
  13. ANGLES -- what's the best combination of angles for any gem type. This utility offers you the results of a whole series of sophisticated math approaches for computing best angle.
  14. APEXES -- when you want more than a flat table, try apex crown facets. This formula will figure out the math for producing the optimum angle for those famous apex facets.
  15. ANIMATION -- this is a self-actuating program that offers an animated series of faceted gem profiles, dramatizing the silhouettes developed when crown and pavilion angles are altered. .
