Assembly Kit For Ready-Made Faceting Machine

You can be faceting beautiful gemstones within a half hour after opening
this package - and for far less than you'd expect to pay. Truth is, you really don't need to invest from $2,000 to $10,000 to see if you'd like to facet gemstones. You can obtain for slightly over $100 an all-metal assembly kit for a professional level model of the Gerald Wykoff's famed and patented Calibrated Jamb Peg.

Within minutes - not hours - you can be faceting magnificent commercial grade gems of your choice.

What makes a jamb peg so fascinating (and the reason why the world's top professionals have preferred a jamb peg for the last 600 years) is the speed, simplicity and excellent results. Fact is, you can learn to use a jamb peg in about 4 hours (or 4 stones) and cut a finished, high quality gem in 1/3rd the time of an expensive protractor machines.

A protractor machine is an excellent device. But it's expensive, requires a machinist's skill to operate (it's no accident that all of the manufacturers of the big, costly protractor milling type faceting machines are machinists by trade) and demands lengthy and intense concentration over too long a period to cut a gem. With a jamb peg, there is a factual condition: to facet a gemstone, you control and dictate to the jamb peg machine, and with a protractor the machine enslaves you because IT cuts the gem, not you. Your time isn't devoted exclusively to cutting a gem. It's eaten up by the need to set complicated machine controls. Faceting a gemstone with the machines now on the market is a practice in sheer monotony which is why so many potentially good faceters give up on it.

As for the jamb peg, you merely slide into a precut slot the tail of the peg holding the gemstone, set an index gear for the facet you want - and commence cutting. It's really that simple.

The simplicity of Wykoff's Calibrated Jamb Peg took learning one of these machines from 4 years to 4 hours. It's the reason he was given a U. S. patent on his jamb peg - the first patent issued on the jamb peg in 600 years. Now anyone can learn quickly how to facet at a professional level. Make no mistake, though. This metal jamb peg is no toy. It's a professional unit that will exceed quality and quantity output on any protractor machine now on the market.

Many so-called "experienced" faceters will offer you the complaint that with a jamb peg you must "cut and look." Of course, you must do that. And you certainly must do it with the big, expensive machies, too. They can't get any closer - despite their intricate settings - to a close facet match than can the jamb peg. Furthermore, with a jamb peg, to check a facet you lift the peg completely off the machine, go wherever or use whatever light/magnification you want, return the peg to the machine and re-commence faceting. Try that with a complicated protractor machine whose peg is generally mechanically lashed to the unit - and you'll quickly discover why tiresome body and neck contortions play such a prominent role in protractor type faceting.

The Calibrated Jamb Peg kit comes to you ready for easy assembly. Your biggest building requirement will be a tube of 2-part epoxsy steel (to hold the metal parts together). Assembly takes about a half-hour for the average person - and you'll quickly have the

a) peg (it holds the stone and controls indexing);

b) the jamb (a square metal plate that features pre-cut slots for provide angles), and

c) the standpost (the unit that allows you to mount the jamb peg on a power platform. Put together these three items and you're ready to facet.

Please keep in mind that this auction is for the faceting unit only: you'll need to come up with your own power platform to hold the abrasive disks and such. For suggestions and suppliers for power platforms, you might want to obtain Wykoff's "How to Make Your Own Faceting Machine." This multi-media CD-ROM program shows you how to make your own wooden CJP for about $25 (wood models work just as effectively as metal ones although the parts wear out rather quickly under heavy use). The bulk of this disk program, though, pertains to showing you the theory and techniques of jamb pegging. You'll need to know how to jamb peg, because the kit comes with building instructions only.

Note: For individuals who have bought or may think of buying the "How to Make a Calibrated Jamb Peg," know that owning this program puts you well ahead of the faceting game. As mentioned earlier, the CD-ROM program also shows how to make a peg (needed if you want to cut in other symetries such as 30, 48 or 40 index gears) in addition to featuring the theory and techniques of jamb pegging. Again, the assembly kit shows you only how to assemble the jamb peg kit . . not how to facet. If you elect to purchase a supply of index gears, don't order a 32-notch gear because one comes with the CJP kit. You'll need only the 30, 40 and 48 to have a full complement of gears. If you do buy the gear set, order them with the assembly kit and there will be no additional s/h requirement. If PayPal does becomes balky about gear s/h in the same order, put in a penny (.01 cents) for s/h.

Metal Index Gears For Faceting Pegs

With the Calibrated Jamb Peg faceting machine you can quickly and easily make additional pegs - each with its own dedicated index gear for cutting different symmetries. Metal index gears can cost a small fortune if you're not a machinist or don't know one. This inexpensive metal alloy casted index gears set contains a 30 (for triangles), 32 for all standard 8-form designs), 40 (for 5-sides designs) and a 48 (more positions for 8-symmetry). If you're relatively new to faceting, please know that you need indexing for different symmetries. The round brilliant and the emerald cut, for example, are 4-fold symmetry gems while a triangle shape is 3-fold. To cut these different designs - and other symmetries as well - you must have an index gear that will discipline your gem holding peg to the proper index or cutting station.

Note: If you purchase the all-metal CJP assembly kit you should be aware that the most popular index gear - the 32-notch - comes with the kit. If you want other symmetries, you'd need only obtain a 30, 40 and 48.

    Faceting 8: Metal Dopping-Transferring Accessories

Faceting - even jamb pegging - requires more than just a faceting machine. You need certain accessories to carry out the various procedure involved with the management of the gemstone. You either pay top dollar to the faceting supply houses or go scrounging.

You don't need to do that anymore.

At the request of many Calibrated Jamb Peg machine builders, Wykoff has now come up with a complete and inexpensive all-metal set of necessary metal accessories that every faceter needs. These are now offered as a kit. The components of the faceting accessory kit includes:

    1) A formal transfer jig - this tool is used for reversing a partially faceted gemstone around to another dopstick so accurate registration is maintained while both ends of the gem are faceted. The jig is a 2-part tool and features pegs so you can use simple rubber bands to keep the opposing dopsticks firmly in alignment in the trays.

    2) A set of five different sized dopstick add-on heads - these alloy metal heads can simply be glued onto the end of a 1/4" diameter dopstick so the faceter will be able to dop up flat-topped as well as the sharp tipped pavilions of gemstones without mishap or chipping

    3) A set of angle plates (not shown) - angles are vital in faceting and these metal templates of 42 and 36 degrees (the universal angle set) are simply pushed up into the intersection of the peg tail and the jamb to assure that the facet-to-lap orientation setup is "on point" and the gem will be cut at the proper angle.

    4) 90-degree table dop - yes, you can cut the all-important table facet by hand lapping, but lock the stone into a 90-degree table top and then you can cut it precisely using the peg

All of the parts are cast in low temperature metal alloys and offer a long service life if used properly. Of course, they will not accept heat so you can't remove a stone that's attached to the dop head with an epoxy or superglue bond. The solution to the removal problem is simple. You merely soak the stone-dop head in Acetone until the glue chemical breaks down.

Faceting 7: DIY Assembly Kit For CJP Pegs

In Calibrated Jamb Peg technology, pegs are dedicated to the single symmetry allowed by the number of idex gear notches.

When a jamb pegger wants to shift the cutting design to a different symmetry - for example, from a 4-fold symmetry brilliant cut to a triangular shape - s/he must shift to a new peg with the approprate index gear i.e., the new triangular gear's notch total must be divisible by 3.

Until now, making additional pegs to obtain design flexibility represented a journey in scrounging or adapting mechanical items into a working, articulated peg. Often, it was enough to stick with a single index gear.

Now you can obtain a DIY all-metal peg kit that can be assembled in minutes with a couple of household tools and some epoxy. Gerald Wykoff has completed production of parts so jamb peggers can order their peg of choice -- a 32-gear, a 30-gear, a 40-gear and a 48-gear.

Each DIY peg kit contains the following items:

    • -- ebook tech guide showing how to assemble the kit peg as well as how to make a DIY peg
    • -- 6" length of 9/32" OD brass tubing
    • -- 1-12" steel peg connecting dowel
    • -- special collar shaft for locking dopsticks in the quill nose with set screw
    • -- index gear trigger (trigger size will be appropriate for the index gear you order)
    • -- selection of 30, 32, 40 or 48 index gear
    • -- special peg tailpiece (horizontal type)

It'll take you about 20-30 minutes to assemble the kit peg. Also, include information on the gear-symmetry peg you want so we can be sure to pack the appropriate parts.
